20 Years of Canadian Pride: Aladaco’s Journey Forward

As Canada Day approaches, Aladaco Consulting Inc. has more than one reason to celebrate. In addition to marking the nation’s 158th birthday, we’re proudly celebrating our own 20-year milestone—two decades as a 100% Canadian energy and carbon management firm.

From our roots as a sole proprietorship to a national consulting leader, Aladaco’s story is one of growth, resilience, and the enduring values of Canadian innovation and collaboration.

In honour of both Canada’s birthday and our own anniversary, we pause to reflect on our legacy and the principles that guide our work. We invite you to celebrate the road ahead with us.

A Legacy Rooted in Purpose

Aladaco was founded in 2005 by Rick Tomson, an engineer with a passion for meaningful work and integrity. Originally envisioned as a small consultancy dedicated to supporting Local Distribution Companies (LDCs) with CDM program delivery in Ontario, Rick’s leadership laid the foundation for a trusted and respected firm. His approachable manner and commitment to technical excellence defined Aladaco’s identity.

Following Rick’s unexpected passing in 2017, his daughter Caroline Tomson stepped in to continue the company’s mission with longtime employee Dan MacDougall. Together, they not only carried forward her father’s vision but also began shaping a new chapter that would elevate Aladaco from a small “boutique” firm to a trusted national force in sustainable energy and carbon management consulting.

Twenty years in business is no small feat. Aladaco’s journey began with a mission to help organizations save energy and reduce their carbon footprint. Over the past two decades, we have delivered on that mission by partnering with utilities, municipalities, hospitals, and industrial organizations to implement sustainable energy and carbon management solutions.

Along the way, we have grown into an organization recognized for its expertise and reliability, all while remaining independently Canadian-owned. This longevity speaks to the trust we’ve built and the tangible impact of our projects, from cutting greenhouse gas emissions to saving organizations money through efficiency improvements.

A New Chapter: Proudly Women-Owned and Led

Aladaco’s story is also one of the power of female leadership. In 2025, we celebrate becoming a majority female-owned and led firm—a significant milestone that reinforces our commitment to inclusive, values-driven leadership.

This transition began in 2020 when Heather Tripp joined the team. Her impactful leadership and passion for sustainability led to her appointment as President in 2022, guiding Aladaco into a new era of national expansion and sector diversification.

Today, our leadership team is 75% women engineers. Our culture is grounded in collaboration, purpose, and community. We champion inclusive leadership, actively support women in STEM, mentor emerging leaders, and prioritize flexible, people-first workplaces.

For us, it’s not just about who leads, but how we lead: with empathy, vision, and a commitment to lasting impact. In a traditionally male-dominated industry, being a women-led business makes our 20-year milestone even more meaningful.
